“You use a glass mirror to see your face: you use works of art to see your soul” -George Bernard Shaw
If art is a mirror, reflecting our own experiences and the world around us, then it’s no wonder that writing about art can be one of the most illuminating ways to write about the self. In this three-hour generative session, we’ll read and discuss examples of personal/critical essays—essays that engage with art as a way to articulate something personal—and generate new writing that incorporates both art criticism and memoir. We’ll discuss the intricacies of essays that make a classic work of art feel brand new, and those that reveal the very real artistic potential of low-brow “guilty pleasures,” and we will give ourselves permission to write with authority about art that moves us, regardless of formal training or expertise.
A recording will be made available for one month after the session, for students who are unable to attend live.
